A Former Federal Prosecutor Who Now Fights For Defendants

Florida mother and daughter facing drug charges

A 54-year-old Florida woman and her 21-year-old daughter were taken into custody Aug. 21 on narcotics charges after officers with the Port St. Lucie Police Department allegedly discovered significant quantities of illegal drugs in their Fairway Avenue residence. The search followed an undercover investigation that was triggered by several reports of suspicious activity in and around the house. The two women face a total of 15 felony drug possession and trafficking charges.

During the undercover operation, officers are said to have purchased 40 prescription sedative pills from the daughter. They also claim to have detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the residence. Reports suggest that this was enough to convince a judge to grant police a warrant to search the premises. Police say that the ensuing search led to the discovery of 100 grams of marijuana, 45 grams of cocaine, 57 Xanax pills, 34 grams of methamphetamine in liquid form and more than 28 grams of synthetic cathinones, which are more commonly referred to by their street name bath salts.

Both of the women were taken into custody at the scene and transported to the St. Lucie County Jail for processing. The older woman was subsequently released after posting a $20,000 bond, but her daughter remains in custody according to reports. Her bond has been set at $271,125.

When presented with a set of facts like these, an experienced criminal defense attorney could urge an alleged drug crimes offender to consider entering into a negotiated plea agreement rather than taking their chances in court. This is because prosecutors work under great pressure to produce results and may welcome the opportunity to resolve cases quickly even when the evidence at their disposal is convincing.
