Police in Jacksonville were called to the scene of what was thought to be a burglary at Maverick Trails Apartment Homes. When authorities arrived, they realized that there was no such event taking place, but what they found resulted in four people facing criminal charges. Upon approaching the apartment, officers realized that there was a strong scent of marijuana coming from an apartment, and there was marijuana in plain view, which triggered a search of the apartment. The search resulted in the discovery of marijuana and other substances.
Those substances included Xanax, cocaine and MDMA in addition to fentanyl. Authorities also said that money and drug paraphernalia was found in the apartment. A 19-year-old and 20-year-old woman were charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of controlled substances. An 18-year-old male was charged with possession of fentanyl and crack cocaine.
Furthermore, he was charged with possessing drug paraphernalia that was intended to be used for smoking a controlled substance. Another 19-year-old man was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana with the intent to sell it. He was also charged with possession cough syrup with codeine without a prescription. It was unclear where the four were being held in custody or if they were allowed to post bail after being taken into custody.
An individual who is charged with drug possession could face significant penalties if convicted. For instance, it may be possible to spend years in prison in addition to paying a fine or spending time on probation. An attorney may review the case and create a defense to a drug charge. Defenses may include casting doubt on witness testimony or challenging the search that led to the seizure of the drugs as being without probable cause.
