A Former Federal Prosecutor Who Now Fights For Defendants

Two Florida residents accused of drug crimes

Local police in Fort Walton Beach arrested a man and woman for drug possession on March 23 after they were pulled over while driving. The woman, 33, and the man, 23, were driving a black Ford Mustang with tinted windows, and the Fort Walton Beach Street Crimes Unit pulled over the vehicle on the basis of a tint violation. According to reports, law enforcement had already received a tip that the vehicle could be carrying drugs.

A drug-sniffing dog was brought out at the scene by police, who said that the dog alerted on the scent of drugs from the vehicle. The police then searched the vehicle and reportedly found 17 grams of methamphetamine, some marijuana, paraphernalia, weighing scales and prescription pills. After they found the drugs in the car, detectives obtained a search warrant for the woman's motel room.

When searching the motel room, police say that they found drug paraphernalia, hypodermic needles and smoking materials. The woman was charged with drug crimes, including trafficking in methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, while the man was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.

People in Florida can face severe consequences if convicted of drug crimes, and the state is known for aggressive charging, prosecution and sentencing. This means that even first-offense drug charges can carry the threat of jail or prison time, costly fines and a potential felony criminal record.

A criminal defense attorney may help provide a defense to allegations of drug offenses, working to avoid a conviction and keep accused people out of prison. This might involve challenging police practices, including questionable traffic stops, coercive searches and other problematic actions that could infringe on people's civil and constitutional rights.
